Journal Assignment – Week One

Age

For this category group, I decided to use examples of birthday parties for each age category. I tried to find images for each category that would represent each age group and the colours associated with them. Themed parties, whether for children, teens or adults are very popular and come with distinct colour palettes, which is why I chose to use this angle.

The connection that I felt each age group had to the colour palette is that they all involve each colour, some more than others. I found that blue and purple are colours that are almost timeless and can be used for fun, high energy parties, or more  classic, simple themed parties. I found that with pink, in each category, it’s a high energy colour and used for higher energy party themes. Yellow or gold yellow can be fun and high energy, or elegant. I found that red was used for high energy, fun parties for each age group.

Gender

I again decided to use a specific subject to represent gender, which are magazines and magazine advertisements. I find advertising in general, is very gender based, and whether it’s beer, clothing, cleaning products, it’s usually always very gender specific.

I felt that both the masculine and androgynous categories had the most in common in terms of  the colours that were used. They both use a lot of black and grey, but there was also cream or light beige used for both. It’s almost like androgynous ads lean towards being more masculine than they are feminine. The feminine ads are very pink but softer pinks which make the ads look softer to look at. The feminine ads didn’t have as much in common with the other two colour wise, I found.

Social Status

I noticed with this colour palette that I created was that the darker blue and greys were very common in both the Wealth and Success and the Importance and Power categories. The darker grey with the car and the deeper blue in the watch tell me that these are colours that signify someone who has really made it to the top. Although purple isn’t used a lot in the images, Oprah is very successful, and I feel like this colour represents elegance and the profound impact she has had. Red, while used a little bit with Barack Obama’s picture, is used more in the political movement images. I feel that the red and the green used signify desperation, sadness and anger.
